Upcycling Workshop

Project Overview

The HERO Upcycling Family Workshop is a one-day, hands-on environmental awareness and creativity event designed for young school students (ages 6–10) and their parents. The activity combines an engaging awareness session on waste reduction and recycling with a collaborative upcycling workshop, where families work together to transform everyday waste materials into decorative and functional objects.

The goal is to nurture a culture of environmental responsibility from home to school, empowering parents and children to act as role models for sustainable living. Prior to the event, the school informs students and their parents about the project, setting the date, location, and agenda of the workshop. Parents are also asked to bring a small quantity of recyclable materials from their homes.

On the workshop day, parents and children first attend an interactive awareness session introducing waste segregation, recycling vs. upcycling, and key environmental challenges. The waste management lifecycle will be explained in simple, child-friendly terms, highlighting the differences between materials that can be reused, recycled, upcycled, or disposed of. Storytelling, visuals, and gamified activities will be used to engage both children and parents in an enjoyable and educational way.

Following the session, families grouped at tables will use the recyclables they brought to create both decorative and functional items such as plastic flower pots, denim pen holders, can-based candle stands, or carton roll organizers.

At the end of the workshop, each group will present their creation and explain its environmental benefit. The HERO team will summarize key takeaways and distribute certificates of participation to all attendees.
